Kidney Stones

Good day Schnauzer lovers. I have a 6 year old Miniature Schnauzer who loves to get kidney stones. The first surgery was in 2020. We changed her food to the canned food for dogs with urinary problems. Then 3 years down the road, she has 5 big stones and a few small ones. This was July 2023, when she had her second surgey. Now here we are 4 months after the last surgery, and she has stones again. She has several small stones. We changed her diet about a month ago to boiled chicken, fish, meat with vegetables. We cannot believe she has stones again and is making us doubt our vet.

Does anyone have recommendations as to how prevent them and best way to help them dissolve without surgery. I really don't want to put her under again. After her last surgery recovery was very slow and she didn't even want water.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sorry to hear about your schnauzer’s issues with kidney stones. Some dogs may be more likely to get stones forming in the urinary tract due to hereditary factors and they can recur if that is the case. A raw or home cooked food diet will be preferable to processed food and making sure that your mini schnauzer drinks plenty of water. A good probiotic supplement will also help as often an underlying bacterial infection can cause stones to form. Cranberry supplements are also believed to help with prevention. I have not experienced this with our dogs so I am only suggesting these from my research. There is a link here with some additional information:~
