wake a new puppy to pee at night?
I am planning to crate train, keeping the puppy in my room at night, so the pet shop guy said I'd bring the puppy out every two or three hours, other things I've read said listen to see if they whimper to go out, what approach do I take?

I would wake puppy to go out just before you go to bed. Then I would wait for puppy to wake then carry them outside where you want them to go.
Waking them during the night you're not letting them learn how to hang on. It's easier for them to learn to hang on through the night with them not eating or drinking for it to come out the other end as quick.
We've done this with both ours and neither have had a crate accident through the night. We too have them in bedroom.

Re: wake a new puppy to pee at night?
Welcome to you & your puppy, my boy was in his crate in our bedroom from his first day home with us, he went all night without doing the toilet. Admit I was up early about 6ish, lifted him straight out, carried him downstairs & popped him in the garden stayed & watched to make sure he did the toilet, couldnt believe that a 8week old puppy had gone all night without doing the toilet. He was toilet trained within a couple of weeks by taking him out every 1-2 hours, giving praise kept him on a lead so that I could keep watch. Socialised him by carrying him on walks to get to know neighbours, kids at swing park, noise of traffic etc, took him in the car, took him to pets at home have to say it was the best thing I did as I have a super friendly boy who was so easy to train. Admit my breeder had socialised him with her grandchildren etc & also had them in a crate. Unlike my last girl who took ages to train & never took to a crate admit she was in the kitchen at night & hated it. Good luck
