Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Hi. I’ve got a miniature schnauzer Gucci and he’s almost 7years old. We had sensitive stomach problem since he was a puppy. So finding the right food for him is a challenge. He was on Royal Canin low fat gastrointestinal wet food for a while now. I was adding a bit of lean chicken or cooked fish to that. And it was all ok. Very occasionally he would have upset stomach. Just before Christmas he started to feel unwell. Usually in the middle of a night he would wake me up to go out and would have a diarrhoea first, and a bit later diarrhoea and sickness. Usually would keep him just on water for 12h and that would do a trick. But not this time. It was on and off every 3-4 weeks with very bad episodes. I took him to a different vets in the end, because our old one would give him antibiotics and didn’t want to do blood test saying it would not show anything so done the blood test with a new vet for pancreas (came back good ) and I started to suspect food allergies so done food allergy test as well and that’s came back even more confusing. It didn’t show anything specific but allergic to pretty much everything at this point I really don’t know what to do. I stopped giving him extra chicken( just trying to eliminate smth and see how he feels) I’m still giving him a fish once a day. Continuing with a wet food as well. I would love to hear from anyone with similar problems and what sort of food you giving. I’m struggling to find wheat free, low fat food on the market ordered for a trial natural vegan wet food Any advice and suggestions welcome.

Olga, my first schnauzer went through something similar. Definitely get a consultation with a holistic vet that specialises in dietary issues. They will work with you and your vet to get the diet that suits Gucci. I would find a vet from this directory https://rfvs.info. It states raw feeding but it may not necessarily be a raw diet that you come up with but it will be something that is appropriate and suits the natural digestive system of your dog. Good luck.

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Hi and welcome
Ive not had this issue, mine can switch the type of food he has daily and no ill effects. This website has lots of info which may be worth reading through. You may want to consider home prepared either cooked or raw.

Also look at this website it has filters so you could look for grain free, low fat

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Similar story; Ollie was (and still is) allergic to a lot of food and treats. Last year he had a bad "do" and the vet suspected Pancreatitis but it didn't come back as that on his tests. He was similar in that he was ill, we would give him plain chicken and rice for a few days, it would clear up and everything was ok and then it would start up again. This went on during Feb and March last year, just before the first lockdown.
We switched to a low fat dry food - Wellness Core Grain Free Low Fat (not the cheapest but seems to enjoy it and most importantly it doesn't make him ill). We get that at Pets at Home (online only). We mix with half a sachet of a Natures Menu pouch of wet food with each meal. These are high meat content, added "super foods" and he seems to enjoy those especially the beef and duck ones. They are grain and gluten free. (Can buy online various places)
We also give him one YuDigest tablet a day as we read at the time that these were good for aiding digestion.
We limit any other treats as they are often full of things he cannot tolerate (grain/cereals etc).
We didn't seek the help of a nutritionist, and it was mainly trial and error for us, but do look at the All about Dog Food site as that is very informative when you are trying to find a specific diet. Good luck. x

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
I agree with the advice above that it would definitely be worth having a consultation with a holistic vet specialising in dietary issues. Many general vets are not schooled in nutrition and are dependent on information from pet food manufacturers for their advice. A number of factors can affect digestion and it would be good if you can find a vet who can take a full in-depth history of Gucci’s health.
And as mentioned above too, Yudigest tablets are useful as a regular supplement to support gut health, while Dorwest Tree Barks Powder can help soothe a sensitive digestion:

If you are open to trying raw food for Gucci, you may find this article interesting too:

We feed our dogs raw and many of the prepared meals we buy for them include tripe. I have found raw feeding the best for all round health with our dogs but I understand that it may not suit all

Thank you everyone for your advices. He seems to be doing well again but only for a few weeks probably. Got him to try new wet food Vegan/grain free/low fat and just adding fish. So far he loves it and poop is looking rather good . Found local pet nutritionist and will book a consultation.

I am a new member, and my mimi is called Winnie, she is 8 and I have been experiencing problems as mentioned above, I have now changed her to grain free wet and dry, would like to ask if I am actually feeding her enough, I usually give her a white fish fillet breakfast, then for her dinner wet food usually Lily’s grain free, quarter of a tin with 50g kibble James well beloved. Can you advise if this is enough or should she have kibble at breakfast too? What do you think. Thanks Maureen

Hello Maureen and welcome to the ForumMocontwo wrote: ↑28 Apr 2021, 10:50 I am a new member, and my mimi is called Winnie, she is 8 and I have been experiencing problems as mentioned above, I have now changed her to grain free wet and dry, would like to ask if I am actually feeding her enough, I usually give her a white fish fillet breakfast, then for her dinner wet food usually Lily’s grain free, quarter of a tin with 50g kibble James well beloved. I cannot advise from experience with using wet food and kibble as I feed our dogs raw food. Many digestive problems are diet related and it can often be better to try and have as simple a diet as possible at least initially to settle down a dog’s tummy if they are not coping with their current diet. It may be best to just use wet food or just kibble rather than mixing the two as it will be harder to work out quantities and nutritional levels mixing them.
If Winnie is a good weight currently (not too thin or too fat) you should be able to just monitor her to make sure she is not gaining or losing weight on the amounts you are feeding rather than trying to work out what she needs beforehand. All kinds of factors can affect how well a dog does on a particular diet from genetics to metabolism and how efficient they are at absorbing the nutrients from the food. As dogs get older they can become less able to absorb the nutrients they need from certain foods and this can cause digestive issues which is another reason for using a simpler food that is not highly processed or contains anything that is hard to digest.
What are the issues you have had with Winnie and her food and has she had a vet check to rule out any health problems?

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Hi Maureen, it's a question of what does she feel and look like shape/weight wise really. Can you feel her ribs, does her waist tuck in slightly. Is she really boney? That informs you whether she needs to eat more.

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Thanks for your reply apologies for spelling as you guessed Winnie is a Mini, she is definitely not under weight or over but from time to time she suffers bloating whereby her tummy is noisy and very windy, hence my thinking maybe I leave her too long from her breakfast to her dinner in the evening. I have had her throughly checked by our Vet for pancreatitis, Cushings, she showed an infection through her poo sample which antibiotics and buscopan seems to have helped. I was just hoping someone may have advice on best diet etc as this may help. Thank you all

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
You could try splitting her meals in three but it is more likely that there is something in the food that is causing the bloating and wind. That is why it can help sometimes to have a simpler diet - raw, cooked or wet food where you know all the ingredients are good quality and no added ‘fillers’ such as grains, legumes (peas, chickpeas, etc.) which can lead to digestive issues. Some companies have substituted legumes for grains as a cheap filler and these although not necessarily causing a serious health problem can lead to digestive issues in some dogs. This is why I favour a raw diet of meat with some added vegetables for our dogs.Mocontwo wrote: ↑28 Apr 2021, 22:41 Thanks for your reply apologies for spelling as you guessed Winnie is a Mini, she is definitely not under weight or over but from time to time she suffers bloating whereby her tummy is noisy and very windy, hence my thinking maybe I leave her too long from her breakfast to her dinner in the evening. You could have a look at the Dorwest Herbs website too as they do stock some supplements to help with tummy issues in dogs but this is not a substitute for a good diet of course

If you are looking for advice on the best diet then after 2 schnauzers one with unpleasant gastric issues for most of his life, my opinion and experience is that a raw diet is the best. It should stop bloating and gas. If you want any more help with a raw diet then many on here who feed raw can help you.

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Have a now 12 month old male, he was allergy/intolerance tested at the vets at 6 months and is allergic to everything as above. We now have to feed him Purina HA. I do doubt the results if I am honest as he has been given toast and a little ham to get him to eat. I was under the impression that they have to be introduced to something to develop an allergy/intolerance and I have certainly never given him kangaroo or ostrich which are on the list of his issues

Re: Sensitive stomach/possible food allergies
Was there a specific reason for the allergy test and what were his symptoms? It does seem hard to believe that any well bred dog suddenly develops allergies to every form of natural food. I am also horrified that vets promote these diets which are made of the cheapest by-products available and are sold at a premium price. I recall Royal Canin selling dog food containing feathers as ‘hypoallergenic’ and see that these are the Purina HA ingredients:Dancon wrote: ↑09 Nov 2021, 18:38 Have a now 12 month old male, he was allergy/intolerance tested at the vets at 6 months and is allergic to everything as above. Maize Starch*, Hydrolysed Soya Protein**, Minerals, Coconut Oil, Sugar*, Rapeseed Oil, Soya Oil, Fish Oil,
* Purified Carbohydrate sources, ** Protein source
How can it possibly be right that a dog whose dentition and digestive system are designed for meat eating needs to be fed starch, oils and sugar as a special diet!
Rapeseed and soya are two of the most common industrially grown products and toxic pesticides and herbicides are regularly used in their production plus there is no means at all to know where they have come from and how they were produced. Purina is owned by Nestlé the confectionery multinational company and, like so many of the industrial giants that are buying up pet food companies, their motive is profit first and foremost.
Just to compare the above list of ingredients on the Purina HA with the details given on this link to the ingredients in one of the foods we give our dogs:
https://www.nutriwolds.co.uk/collection ... asted-beef
While any dog may develop an allergy to a particular food for a number of different reasons, I am very sceptical about the number of dogs supposedly unable to eat real fresh food and would encourage anyone with a dog showing signs of sensitivity to a particular food to eliminate that protein source alone from the diet initially and see if the issue resolves. Allergies can be triggered by environmental and chemical / pharmaceutical products also simply as an over-reaction to a substance which then leads to sensitivity in other respects.
A new book out recently called The Forever Dog is a very interesting and informative read regarding the food we feed our dogs and I would recommend it

Yes, he was being sick a lot so vet suggested the Blood intolerance tests, cost us £400! Will do some more research and have a look at the forever dog book you suggested zeta1454
