UK breeder for a black standard

The Standard Schnauzer is a working or utility dog and is the original breed of the three sizes. Standard Schnauzers are generally a robust, squarely built, medium-sized dog with aristocratic bearings.

Hi Lee and welcome to the Forum :)

You will have to get recommendations for individual breeders by private message or email only not on the open Forum but do bear in mind that standard schnauzers are much more rare in the U.K. than minis, the most common colour is pepper & salt, and that registrations of all breeds most particularly by reputable breeders plummeted during the last nine months due to the COVID-19 situation. Most of the best breeders have delayed having puppies until things become more ‘normal’. In 2019, there were only 172 standard schnauzer puppies registered by the Kennel Club and up to the end of the 3rd quarter of 2020 only 95 standard schnauzer pups had been registered in the whole of the U.K. with only 18 in the 3 months between June and September.

You could try contacting the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain or the Northern Schnauzer Club - the Secretary of these clubs should be able to offer some advice to you re finding a breeder of standards.

You could also post on the Clubs’ Facebook pages with your query. I cannot tell from your post here how experienced you are with the schnauzer breed but, inevitably with a relatively rare breed and even more so during the current climate, the best breeders are going to be selective about the homes to which their puppies will go. You are best advised to try and find one or more breeders who you trust and are confident in as regards their breeding protocol and getting on a waiting list for whenever they next breed.

Good luck but do be prepared to wait some time if you are set on a black standard schnauzer :)

Hi Lee, just a few things to consider re getting a schnauzer whether miniature or standard:

If you are buying a pure bred dog from a reputable breeder, they will be breeding to the ‘breed standard’ which means they will be aiming for a litter of puppies that are the correct height and build for the breed. Although inevitably there will be times that a litter may have one or two pups that are slightly bigger or smaller than the standard size, no reputable breeder will be trying to breed larger or smaller puppies deliberately.

There are hundreds of people who breed miniature schnauzers but, if you are looking for a responsible breeder you should start by checking out the Assured Breeder lists which will give you the reassurance that health tests are being carried out (eye tests and DNA test for Mycobacterium Avium Complex ) and a range of other necessary requirements for good breeding. The lists for miniature schnauzer ABS breeders is on this link:

https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/search ... rest=False

The other thing to consider is what exactly you are looking for with your choice of dog as miniature schnauzers and standards are two quite different breeds and not just different sized versions of the same kind of dog. Miniature schnauzers are generally easier to train, friendly little dogs that make versatile family pets and companion dogs. They are more high maintenance grooming wise than certain other breeds of dog and are inclined to be very vocal - barking is pretty much a mini schnauzer trait.
Standard schnauzers are a much older breed, a strong willed and well built dog which requires an owner with the patience and understanding. They are not really a breed for a novice dog family. There is a link here to the Kennel Club website guide to looking for a dog which may help to pinpoint some of the things you need to consider when looking for a breed of dog:

https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/gettin ... right-dog/

Ideally, if you have little experience of either standard or miniature schnauzers, you should try and get to meet some of both breeds and have the opportunity to talk through with people who own them the ups and downs of living with a puppy and an older dog of each. The Discover Dogs event in London is an ideal opportunity for this:

https://www.discoverdogs.org.uk/

The Crufts dog show which is planned for July should have a Discover Dogs section too but much may depend on the current situation in the country re Covid-19.

You can of course research the breeds characteristics and requirements online or from books but these are nowhere near as useful as seeing the dogs and talking to their owners direct.

If you are an experienced dog owner, I would recommend you do contact some of the Assured Breeders to find a quality miniature schnauzer or get a recommendation from one or more of these as to any standard schnauzer breeders they might know who could help you. The other alternative, if you are looking primarily for a medium sized dog as a family pet, you could also try the Dogs Trust or other reputable dog shelters as it seems that huge numbers of young dogs of all and any type bought on a whim through the past nine months of restrictions, have now been abandoned or surrendered to shelters throughout the country.

If you have your heart set on a schnauzer, do research as much as possible about the breeds, read through some of the topics on the Forum (check the Board Index) which may give an insight into living with each if the schnauzer breeds and be prepared to wait and to travel for a puppy from a first class breeder. There are far too many badly bred, poorly raised puppies by those solely interested in financial gain to risk supporting such a cruel trade by searching online puppy selling sites.
