First full groom!

Post by Laura-J »

So Floyd went for his first full groom yesterday and after looking rather scruffy came back like a different dog! I can't not believe how grown up he looks!Image

Floyd looks fantastic, how old is he. My pup is looking shaggy and I'm wondering when to start, I want to hand strip though?

Have a look in the grooming section or do a search, there are loads of threads relating to stripping. I started at around 10 weeks so your pup will be more than ready

Laura,he looks so grown up . If you decide to strip,it's very easy to do,just needs a routine..you will get lots of help here.

Hi Laura

I love Floyd's new look - Oscar (my black mini) had his first Schnauzer groom a few weeks ago, he was hand stripped and his body fur is a little wiry rather than looking trim/neat. Was Floyd hand-stripped?

I presume hand stripping needs constant work to remove the wiry look or is that a by-product?

Thanks
Mike

Hand stripping a dog involves removing the dead hair and soft undercoat to maintain the harsh wiry top coat. It is possible to learn how to do this yourself and Oscar's breeder should be able to help you with this or, if not, a professional groomer may be able to give you some tips. It is something that is best done on a regular basis rather than a one- off every so often both from the point of view of the groomer and the dog :-)

There is a link here that explains a bit more about hand stripping :
http://groomarts.com/services/hand-stri ... ion-sheet/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And this picture shows why removing the soft undercoat is beneficial to the dog to keep it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. A hand stripped harsh coat is also much more weather proof generally and will not get soaked through in rain in the way a clipped coat does.
