Right amount of kibble

Post by Puppypower2024 »

Hi all! I have a beautiful 3 month old mini Schnauzer, I am currently feeding him 90g of Iams puppy feed split over 3 times during the day, 30g a time. I know each feeding guide is approx, he is just over 4 kg in weight at the moment so I am wondering is this a sufficient amount per day? It can be very confusing as to the different quantities out there. Thanks for your help!

Hi and Welcome
Looking at the iams site for a 2kg puppy up to 105g, 5kg puppy 3-6 months old it says up to 175g. So i'd say you could up the amount. However all dogs are different and have different requirements. Jasper for instance looking at packaging guidelines he only eats around a third of the amount, although he does have other training treats and chews, but he would never eat the full amount even without treats and chews. Food manufacturers tend to overstate the amount of food to feed as they dont want dogs to look skinny.

Run your hands over your puppies ribs, there should be a decent layer of flesh but you should still be able to feel individual ribs. This goes throughout the dogs life.

Personally I would also look to changing what food you feed, Iams isnt a particularly good food. take a look at allaboutdogfood.co.uk as you can see Iams is only 57% I would look for something over 75%. The higher the quality of food you feed the less you have to feed although the price may be higher. Lower quality foods are bulked up with fillers to make them cheaper and you have to feed more.
