Mini very big!
Hi , my mini schnauzer is 10 months old now and weighs 13.1kgm! He is not overweight but looks more like a Standard Schnauzer and everyone including my vet says this. I got him last year from a breeder who owns a Pet Hotel near Lymm in Cheshire and saw his mum (not big )with the other 7 pups and his dad (not big). My pup was one of the smallest of the lot. He is a lovely happy dog who never stops wagging his tale and we love him dearly. His Kennel Club papers say he's a mini but I can't understand why he should be such a big puppy.
Just wondered if anyone else had a puppy from the same parents - he is 'Warburton Turn Up The Heat" or if anyone knows of any mini's that have turned out big?

Re: Mini very big!
It can be difficult to predict the sizes of individual puppies from a litter even when the parents are not particularly large or small. Standard schnauzers look quite different from miniature schnauzers apart from the size and, just because your boy is larger than the "breed standard" size need not mean he is not a miniature schnauzer. Vets are not always the best people to advise on breeds and we visited one vet practice where the breed identification chart up in the surgery actually had a standard schnauzer picture to identify a mini schnauzer
It is also rare to have a black and silver standard schnauzer as the only colours recognised for this breed are black and pepper & salt.
I would recommend that you get your mini eye screened after he is a year old however as, according to his pedigree records with the Kennel Club, none of the dogs in his immediate pedigree, including his parents, have ever been eye screened for the hereditary eye conditions that can affect mini schnauzers. He does also have a very high COI ( Coefficient of Inbreeding) at 20.5% compared to the breed average of 4.9%
You will need to go to one of the BVA eye specialist vets for this and, as you have no history of eye testing in his family, it will be worth repeating the test in other years just to be sure there is no problem. The link to the eye testing vets is here:

Re: Mini very big!
Oscar, our Mini, is now 17 months old and weighs in at 11kg - I have seen Mini's much smaller and also bigger - I know there are 'breed standards' of ideal size/weight but let's be honest, we are all different weights and sizes and so I don't see what's different with dogs.
Of course I appreciate we need to ensure our dogs are not overweight in terms of still being able to feel ribs etc but if you can feel the ribs and your dog is heavier than breed standard - what's the harm.

Exactly, take our Hugo. Just clicked past 10 months old, probably 12 inches up to the shoulder and weighs in at 6kg. He's a small male, just like the breeder told us he would be. Doesn't help that he's a very picker eater but does manage to get through 300kg of RAW/BARF a day, doesn't look malnourished and has plenty of energy to run. Don't get me wrong, would love it if Hugo was a bit bigger/heavier but he's such an amazing boy, we wouldn't sway him for any other.

I have two minis, Georgie who is salt and pepper, tiny and weighs 6.8 kg and Monty who is black and silver and is 15kg, and he's not fat either, just large and tall. I also saw both his parents who were not especially large. I've also seen standards and he's really not much smaller. He's fabulous though and such a lovely dog, he just isn't going to win at crufts!

Whilst I haven't had a mini this size, a lot are.
Zeta is right though he needs to be eye screened, (his parents should have been when you bought him and the pups should have been eye screened).

Re: Mini very big!
My two girls are just little minis. Zena has had 3 litters and Molly 2. Both males I used were just a tad taller than my girls. Zena produced 13 pups all up and only a few stayed small where the others grew these long legs. Molly produced 12 pups and some of hers have such long legs also. Some of these would be close to standard size I would think but they all no matter what size are gorgeous animals. It was lucky that I knew they came in all shapes and sizes other wise I would have been left wondering. And funny enough some buyers actually wanted the bigger pups and others the smaller.

Hi
I've just come across this post by chance. I think we have a sister of your boy - born 5th May 2016 at the (Breeder name removed) in Lymm. She is also big for a miniature Schnauzer, but absolutely adorable! How is your boy getting on?

Hello. I also have a male from the same breeder. He is now nearly 8 months and weighing 13kg. He is so big in comparison to my mums two miniature bitches. He also has giant paws. He is the best, dopey, soft boy though. But yes, a lot bigger even though mum and dad were regular miniature size x

Ah ha, my Miniature Schnauzer comes from the Warburton's line, too, and he's huge!! His mum was Warburton's Live and Let Die and his grandma was Warburton's Sapphire.
He is nearly 7 months old and already 37cm (14.5 inches) and weighs 8.16kg. I hope he doesn't grow much more but he will fill out I think. I'm going to get him neutered very soon.
Does anyone know how much Schnauzers grow after 7 months?

Re: Mini very big!
Both of mine haven't grown a great deal in height after 7 months but have continued to develop muscle and fill out.
I would hold off as long as possible on the neutering for many reasons ( neither of mine have been neutered). The testosterone has an effect on their growth and they can end up with longer limbs if the testosterone is removed before they've finished growing and the growth plates closed. I personally wouldn't do it under 18 months to 2 years old if I were to have it done.
