The Standard Schnauzer is a working or utility dog and is the original breed of the three sizes. Standard Schnauzers are generally a robust, squarely built, medium-sized dog with aristocratic bearings.

On a recent trip to the Canadian prairies from our home on Vancouver Island, our Std Schnauzer Dismas encountered the wily Gopher. He became obsessed as the gophers played their "Wackamoly" game with him, popping up in one hole, whistling at Diz, then disappearing, only to pop up at another hole. This went on for hours. We thought the sign he happened to stand by was the perfect foil for his game.
