Insurance query

Looking after the health and welfare of your Schnauzer can be a full time job. You will find information on neutering, spaying, vaccinations, vet visits, upset tummies, Schnauzer bumps and much more here. Ask a question and someone will have had a similar experience. We also appreciate updates on how your Schnauzer is recuperating. A separate section is dedicated to our older Schnauzers.

Hello,

We’ve got a 6 month old standard. Currently KC insured. Does anyone have good advice for pet insurers at all please?

Make sure you get one with lifetime cover. This means your cover amount basically restarts every year even for previous conditions. Some of the basic covers are per condition, so if they have an ongoing illness once you have reached the limit you cannot claim anymore, but with lifetime it will reset the limit each year. It is the most expensive option and companies have different limits. Excess can vary a lot also the cheaper covers are normally higher before you can claim. Basically get the best you can afford.

I would use one of the comparison websites they are good for seeing the differences in levels of cover if nothing else as well as maybe getting it a bit cheaper than going direct.

I've only got experience with Morethan which was for previous dog. He was very ill at a year old with kidney failure the vet bills were huge but they paid everything direct to the vet (some companies you have to pay them and claim back or its also vet dependant whether they do it or not) did not have any problems at all. When he became ill again at 6 years old again with kidneys still no issues with claiming the only thing they wouldnt pay for was for the vet to come to our house to put him to sleep but wasnt going to quibble on that. We also got his full purchase price back as he passed away under 7 years old didnt really see that as a bonus to be honest :( but it was part of the plan.

Jasper is insured with Petplan, they were the best at the time, Morethan had really gone up in price. Only claimed once for him so far when he had to have a biopsy. Again no issues they paid direct to vet.

Also forgot to add. Most policies dont come into effect until 14 days after the start up date so make sure your KC cover overlaps by 14 days with the new cover otherwise you wont be insured.
