Quick question - How tall will a miniature schnauzer grow?

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

Quick question - How tall will a miniature schnauzer grow?

Post by christopher_moran »

Hi everyone. We are considering a miniature schnauzer for our family, and I was wondering how tall an adult female will grow to? I understand that they generally grow to around 30cm to the shoulder, but what about to the top of their heads? And how long roughly would they grow to?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum :)

If you are considering introducing a miniature schnauzer into your family and are not familiar with the breed, I would recommend that you go to a dog show where miniature schnauzers are being exhibited and you will be able to see a number of dogs and bitches and be able to discuss any questions with their owners /breeders. It is vital that you get to actually see any breed of dog before committing to bringing one into your family. As well as dog shows there are ‘Discover Dogs’ events (in England) where you can get to see dogs and talk to their owners about the breed health, temperament and what it is like to live with a miniature schnauzer :)

Regarding the adult height:

Ideal height: dogs: 36 cms (14 ins); bitches: 33 cms (13 ins).

Also be aware genetics play a part in size and you are not guaranteed a certain size.

Japsers Dad is a multi international champion shown all over europe his Mum was a Junior champion so you'd think he would be spot on for size with regards to breed standard. He was one of the 2 smallest in the litter and was tiny compared to our previous schnauzer, but has ended up at 16.5ins, 41cms at the shoulder. Yet a half brother is breed standard size and has qualified for crufts next year.
