looks like a bad case of dandruff.

Grooming is an important part of looking after your Schnauzer. Regular grooming will help keep your Schnauzer healthy and comfortable and you will spot potential problems early. Whether you decide to clip or strip your Schnauzer, help is on hand. Schnauzers are generally a non-shedding breed and will require a fair amount of grooming to get rid of dead hair.

looks like a bad case of dandruff.

Post by al shookup »

My 10 year old dog Louie suddenly seems to have developed a bad case of dandruff. Checking on the internet it could be mites and because our vet is only dealing with emergencies due to covid19 I wondered if there is a shampoo that you can suggest which will eradicate them quickly.
any help appreciated

thanks

Are there any other symptoms, itching, scaly skin, is the dandruff moving? If it is mites it will need an anti parasitic treatment and I would only use that if the vet advised they were mites and also prescribed the treatment. It could be really dry flaky skin and just need a good shampoo with aloe and oatmeal and maybe feed some oily fish (sardines in spring water) to treat naturally. I would defo get a vet to look at it first. If yours won't I am sure there are some that will.

As Julie says, you really need a correct diagnosis before using any remedy whether natural or not as until you know what you are dealing with any treatment may not work. Even though many vets are only dealing with emergencies (and this is beginning to change) most will offer a detailed telephone consultation or possibly online which may help?

If it is a case of mites or if you are desperate to try something, diatomaceous earth is a harmless powder which is very effective at killing mites on the skin or in bedding etc. There is a company who sell a product using this for dogs or you can just get the diatomaceous earth powder (human grade only!) from other stockists:

If you are looking for shampoos then either a gentle one, if this is just bad dandruff / dry skin or a parasite repellent one may help if it is needed. This company also sell products to benefit the skin generally:

Do try to get a professional assessment though if you can so you know exactly what you are trying to remedy. Hope you can help Louie recover from whatever is affecting him very soon.

There is a link here which has details about "walking dandruff" mites too:
