Almost 14 weeks and current weight question

Post by Frederickdawg »

I just tried an online puppy weight calculator. It said my puppy is underweight protected wise. I don't think that to be true. He was born 7th July 2021 and his current weight at 14 weeks is 7.5lbs. The calculator estimates his full grown weight to be a mere 13.5 lbs. ?

Ozzy was 10lbs at 14 weeks and he now weighs a lean 20.5lbs at 15 months and 15.25 inches tall. But he's considered big for the breed. I think usually they double the weight at 14 weeks for estimated adult size.

That calculator I used was a duff I think. I used another and it projected weight of around 17-18lbs. I prefer larger to be honest. There's a well known breeder near me that breeds "teacups" which I avoided. Tobias' parents looked big when I saw them. Mum was 20 lbs dad was about 18lbs.

Jasper was 7.5lbs 10 inches at 10 weeks, 15.5lbs 14 inches at 19 weeks, hes remained at 22lbs for the past year. He's a tall and very skinny mini 16.5 inches :))
Barney was 8.6lbs 11 inches at 10 weeks, 14.5lbs 13 inches at 16 weeks, full grown was 25lbs at 15.5 inches. He was true stocky schnauzer build.

Wowzer. I just weighed Tobias he’s 13lbs now. Was born 7/7. I think he’s going to hopefully be over 20lbs when fully grown. ?

Ok so he’s safe to assume Tobias weight will be over 20lbs at bare minimum when he’s an adult. Which is what I wanted. I wanted a big mini.

I would say yes. Ozzy is 20.6 pounds, I wanted a big mini too, I think he is a nice size for me. Tall enough and strong looking.

Hi all,

I just weighed my pup and was shocked to see on the calculator that she is at the top of the overweight centipede. She is 5months and weighs 6.8kg. She doesn’t look like she is carrying any extra weight, she’s a good shape and has a decent ‘tuck’.

I’m worried now!

Hi Lynette,
Do you know the size of your pup’s parents? If they were the breed standard size for a mini schnauzer there is no reason to think your mini will be oversized. Also, there is a difference between being overweight and just a larger than usual size which could mean that her weight is just perfect for her overall size.

I would not worry too much about online calculators or other general guides if your puppy is growing well, is fit and healthy and enjoying life to the full. A rule of thumb guide as to an overweight dog is whether you can feel (not see) their ribs but you can also have a professional assessment at the vet if you are concerned.

I was really shocked as I know by eye she is a decent size and weight and without weighing her, you’d say she was ideal for her height.

Turns out my scales are broken. 🙄 She actually weighs 4kg.

But thank you so much for your reply, I was panicking that I was feeding her too much. Your advice was great and really reassuring. So sorry that I got it all wrong!

My boy was 6.17kg at 19 weeks. He is NOT overweight. I worried about his size being too big at times as well, but turns out his weight is just about perfect. I stopped fretting about the calculator estimates and just kept my eye on his ribs (feeling them) and hips. I looked at his shape from above, he kept a nice hour glass shape, that's what you want to see. Bear in mind, as puppies they go through periods where they look rounder before they got a growth spurt.
