Chemical flea, tick and worm treatments - an informative article.

Post by zeta1454 »

I recently came across this article by Dr Mark Elliott BVSc VetMFHom MRCVS MLIHM PCH DSH RSHom, a vet concerned about the extensive promotion via certain vet surgeries in the U.K. of anti-parasitic products for dogs. Products which are also available over the counter in pet stores and which pose a risk not only to the health of the dog but also to their human family, as well as the critical effect the chemicals they contain have on the wider environment. It is a long article but contains much useful information and references which make it worth a read for anyone considering or using chemical flea, tick or worming products on a regular basis. Although this is primarily for Forum members in the U.K. as it refers to how these products are sold here, it should be of interest to anyone wherever they live:

It's interesting you should post this as I came across another article. It was very long and covers different findings but basically they found that children and adults living in a household with a dog that has chemical treatments ( not just spot on ) were found to have traces of the chemicals in their urine. They concluded that it wasn't just touching the pet but the chemicals could get transferred to dust around the house.

It really is worrying how much our environment is contaminated with chemicals that we often know nothing about or any idea how we may be affected by them :(

I agree. Then of course theres micro plastic thats been found in shellfish that gets eaten and is passing through the food chain.

Slightly off topic. I was only saying to OH last night that if global warming had been the other way around and it had been global cooling. Would the governments of the world acted quicker? When global warming first started being mentioned lost of peoples attitude was " ooh lovely warmer summers and winters" I think the attitude would have been a lot different if everyone thought it was going to be more snow and ice.
