Agility training in Suffolk

Post by spicerw1fe »

Morning all,

we are getting ready to welcome our puppies to the home and whilst I know we can't do anything like Agility with them until they are at least 9 months to a year old, we would like to know where our nearest centre is so that we can hopefully go and watch and get them used to the noise, the dogs, the equipment etc.

Does anyone know of an agility or training school close to Bury st Edmunds in Suffolk?
Also, can anyone recommend a good garden set for fun?

Thank you.

Hi Jacqui...How many puppies are you getting..?...normally a good breeder will recommend you buy just one pup, train it and then add another after at least 18 months..

Re agility..it is better to first do obedience training ,a basic course...then agility after 14 months when growth plates are closed and you won't damage the joints through subjecting them to repeat impact force from jumping etc..or stress fractures from weaves etc..

Hi robin,

we are getting two,

The breeder is not local to us so doesn't know anyone around here.
Yeah we will do obedience first and get them behaving before we do anything more taxing!!

I agree with Jo that it is not recommended to take two puppies at the same time as you will need to do a lot more work - training each separately as regards house training, walking on lead etc - and potentially may have difficulty with them bonding with each other rather with you. It is possible but be prepared that this will be much harder than taking a single pup and adding another when the first is fully trained.

Regarding agility, that is something for the future (as mentioned above) to avoid damage to developing bones. There is a useful link here to appropriate exercise for growing pups at each stage of their development:
https://www.puppyculture.com/new-approp ... rcise.html

Play items that you could get for the garden would be tunnels, balance boards and small ramps. You really just need to allow the puppies to develop body confidence and build up their muscles at this stage as real agility will be some time away.

It would also be worth booking in your puppy/puppies for an examination at a canine chiropractor as soon as you have them home with you. Our canine chiropractor offers a free puppy check but even if you need to pay, it will be money well spent to just have a professional assessment of the puppy as regards spine and alignment. Even the best bred puppies can have suffered a minor trauma during birth, been knocked over by a sibling during play or stepped on by an adult dog and at an early age even very minor issues may result in imbalance and/or painful issues later. An early chiropractor assessment/ treatment can not only ensure your puppy is physically balanced and strong but will also give you the opportunity to make a contact that may well prove very useful in the future if your dog/s do take up agility.
