1st real playdate

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

1st real playdate

Post by Schnauzerluv »

Hey all! It was Ozzy's first time off lead with another dog yesterday. I brought him (also for the 1st time) to my parent's house in cottage country. A neighbour/friend brought over a dog he watches while his cottager owner goes to work.

It was a sweet little shitzu girl about 4 or 5 years old named Molly. Ozzy and Molly made friends pretty much right away!

I let him off his lead and even took off his harness because it was pretty warm and poor Ozzy gets hot with his black fur.

The little pups were racing around tearing it up, dust flying all around (it's very dry here this year and my parent's house is built on a lake and surrounded by sand). The man that was watching Molly was laughing his head off at the two ripping it up. We were all laughing, but he was really getting a kick out of it 😊.

It was so cute, they were exploring side by side, chasing each other (so fast!) and play bowing.

Got some pics!

He really seemed to enjoy his little playmate!
It was very exciting to watch and made me happy because we planned on having a second dog one day.

Thats so good hes got a playmate, I love watching dogs playing, even better they are around the same size. So many over here seem to be springer spaniel, labrador size fortunately Jasper isnt bothered if they get a bit rough he just bounces back for more, but he does prefer them his own size.

Haha, they do think they are larger than they are don't they?

I hope he will visit again and bring Molly when i'm there because it was so sweet to see them go. Ozzy doesn't have any other playmates, he only gets to greet other dogs sometimes. People here don't let dogs socialize on walks ☹ He has a playmate Misha, but she's a king Shepard/rottie mix and he doesn't really engage with her, he is not trustful of her and is a bit scared. He met her as a puppy, her owners let her off lead and all she did was run all around, scare him and bowl into him. I think he remembers.

I wish he had a friend to run with around.....

Jasper would love to be his playmate :D

I find it interesting how different dog culture is around the world. Your area they dont socialise on walks, US seems to be lots of dogs parks where its a free for all in an enclosed space, China etc dogs are only just starting to really be viewed as pets. UK is a mix of all sorts not really dog parks but private areas that can be rented for play. Over here is very much an off lead culture with many cliff walks and of course loads of beaches. I've had some strange looks having Jasper on a long line almost as though if he cant be off lead he shouldnt be here. I could be totally wrong about my impressions of other countries of course =))

Awww I'd love it if Jasper and Ozzy could be playmates! They would get along so well and have a blast!

We have dog parks here, probably the majority use them, because I dont see very many dogs on our walks and I know my neighbors have dogs, but never see them. The parks are like you say, a free for all and a lot of inexperieced or ignorant dog owners and untrained dogs. Not too mention potential health issues like papilloma. I can't take that chance with Ozzy. So some dog owners will rather set up playdates with a few select dogs. Which is what I'd prefer. I just wish I could find him a friend! I hope to see Molly there at my parent's place again.

I'm pretty sure the law requires dogs to be leashed in public here. There is or was a law in my province that required any dog over 40lbs to wear a mussel in public. Don't know how much that is enforced.

That's another reason I'm thinking more and more of a second dog. We always planned it, but we were lucky to find Ozzy with Covid as it is. He was still a handful at times, but lately I've been able to imagine him with a little sister. (He's been neutered as per contract).

For now I've been trying to play like a dog lol. I have no idea if it works, but he seems to want to play with most dogs he meets for more than a quick hello and he knows how to.....
I was also verbally rewarding him every time he made a playful gesture with another dog. And I guess luckily he's had no bad experiences with other dogs (with exception to one dog, but I think they are slowly making mends.)

It would just be nice if he had a friend to run around with instead of slow me. I don't know how normal it is to play bitey-face with your dog 😂
